Toe Rings

Toe Rings, like any other jewelry, are indeed a statement of style and tradition. A toe ring, based on the word itself, is a ring usually made from various metals and non-metal components which are worn on the toes, specifically on the toe of either foot. Customarily, toes with toe rings are common to women but as time goes by this has become a trend to men as well.

Historically, wearing of toe rings is a part of the Hindu practice, which symbolically signifies the married status of Hindu women. It is called the bichiya, pronounced as bee-chee-ya. Based on custom, these rings are worn in pairs and are usually made of silver and are quite elaborate, as exemplified by diamond toe rings, white gold toe rings and a few gold toe rings. Although a gold toe ring is not as common as the other examples, because of a respected status given to gold by the Hindus, modern designs include samples of them today. In addition to these modern designs are more complicated pieces called bichiya sets that include pairs of four rings for the five toes but excluding the little pinky.

Other non-metal contemporary designs of these rings are the gem stone toe ring, beaded toe ring, black hills gold toe rings, tiara toe rings and the very lavish elephant toe ring which blends the style of today and the traditions of the past. Aside from the matrimonial functions of it, toe rings also serve a significant role to women as it creates a slight sound if the women wore it while walking barefoot on a harder surface. This enables them to be tracked at night in order to keep them safe.

Today, as the Western culture embraces this style, toe ring styles of inexpensive quality are being made to fit the modern fashion trends. Styles like cheap toe rings and even toe ring tattoos are made available for more people to afford this seemingly growing fad like thumb rings and anklets. In addition, cheap adjustable toe rings are being produced.

Jewelry today indeed mirrors the beautiful culture of the past and the developing trends of today. It only proves that life is indeed a union of tradition and fashion into interesting pieces shaped to fit not only the modern women but even the modern men. With the expanding trend of style and function, toe rings are expected to outpace the usual rings.
